Thanks for taking the time to pay a visit to my webpage. It's primarily an on-going journal of the development and adventures of my latest band, with deviations to other topics and anecdotes arising from my relationship with music - both as a musician and as a fan - and my life here in Buenos Aires. I hope you are amused and entertained.

(He's got) Betty Davis eyes

So far this year the boat that is the band has been pitching and rolling from one storm to the next, with me at the helm doggedly fighting to stop the whole thing from completely capsizing. First there was the cowardly walkout by half of the band, just when we had a gig to prepare; then the painfully slow process of trying to get Hugo and Nacho ready for the concert itself; followed by the impending departure of Germán and the desperate and largely fruitless search for a suitable, and ultimately any, replacement. While that search should be taking up most of my attention, other unnecessary distractions continue to arise.

At 50 years old, Nacho is an overgrown schoolboy and - in that school-boyish way - obsessed with sex. Every conversation seems to present him with an opportunity to mention one of his numerous international girlfriends - Scots, Irish, Swiss, Danish, to name but a few - and to relate some lewd and inappropriate anecdote. Initially this seemed kind of amusing, but as time has worn on his obsession has become eye-rollingly tedious and somewhat irritating. To be honest, I have begun to think that it's largely a fantasy which exists only within Nacho's mind.

The current line-up of the band, now that Germán has departed, consists of five guys and one woman: Marisa. Since the band is an amateur/hobby project it is only natural that all of us have real lives and jobs beyond the group. Most of these jobs are pretty mundane: English teacher; Software designer; Interior designer; etc. Marisa, however, when she isn't singing backing vocals for Vinilo Sensation, works in the real word as a professional dancer and part time model. She is 30 years old and dances in costume at events and presentations and on stages in discos, as well as doing things like working on the Ferrari display stand at a recent car show. As you can imagine Marisa is very beautiful and athletic, which is perfect on stage as eye candy to distract the audience’s attention from all us tired old men at the back.

And here is where the problem arises … Nacho just can't stop staring at Marisa's ass!

To make matters even worse, Nacho has quite dark skin and very big eyes, which makes his lecherous gazing even more obvious. Marisa has shown herself so far to be a very strong willed person and a very pro-active asset to the vocal section of the band. And to be honest, since her job often involves dancing on stages wearing tight clothing in front of large groups of leering fans or even TV cameras, I don't think one more goggle-eyed pervert is going to bother Marisa very much. But it is beginning to irritate myself and some of the others.

I've commented to Ariel on a number of occasions that I value Marisa and her musical contribution to the band a lot more than I do that of Nacho, and should Marisa mention that she feels in any way uncomfortable, I will be down on Nacho like a ton of bricks. But apart from that I've been largely letting the situation slide; my attention has been focused on so many other things recently. However, events last week have brought things to somewhat of a head.

Last Friday, Nacho and I were the first to arrive for practice. We jammed together for a while, and then Ariel and Marisa turned up. With only two singers a trumpet and the drums, there wasn't a lot to do except continue setting up equipment and wait for the others to arrive. Very quickly, Nacho started into one of his dreadful anecdotes: something about a friend having sex with a dead prostitute on a beach in Africa! As the tale unfolded and it became easy to see where it was going, I quickly and loudly jumped in with something directly related to the songs we were practicing and playing. Unable to take the hint, when I paused for breath, Nacho leapt back in to continue his story. Fortunately at that moment the others began to arrive and any growing tension was dissipated away.

This whole incident was shocking and took Nacho's sexual obsession to a whole new level, well beyond the annoying ass-staring. This kind of talk isn't appropriate in almost any social circumstances I can think of, and certainly not in front of a woman in a room full of guys. And so it falls to me to play headmaster to this 50 year old school boy at the next opportunity I can get him alone. This isn't something I should have to do in a group of grown-ups, and it’s certainly not a job I relish.

Play that funky music

Sometimes everything comes together just when you least expect it.

It had been a tense few weeks running up to the latest concert, and I wasn't the only one in the band with doubts about whether the brass section could deliver the goods. I was beginning to despair and had pretty much written off the concert before it even began. The late addition of Marisa on backing vocals had given the band a much needed boost of positive energy, but it seemed too little too late.

As the concert approached I seriously considered dispensing with the services of both Hugo and Nacho, believing that they were actually making a negative contribution to the sound of the band. Two weeks before the gig, Nacho missed a much needed practice session, and the next week - with just seven days to go - Hugo failed to attend what was supposed to be the final rehearsal before the show. I was, with some justification, both furious and desperate.

I decided that the gig should be a 'reward' for their hard work. We could turn down the sound of the brass section on the front of house mix while keeping the stage monitors turned up, that way the audience would never hear Nacho and Hugo and they would never know. And a couple of days after it would be: "Chao chicos".

Tom, Ariel, Germán and I were all sufficiently well rehearsed that we had no worries about our own playing. But the apparently unconcerned attitude of Hugo and Nacho was proving a very unwelcome distraction and taking my attention away from where I wanted it to be: improving my performance skills and developing the presentation of the show. I began to wonder what must be going on in their heads; do they actually care about the band or are they just having a laugh?

Over that weekend, stage fright or something took hold and a somewhat concerned Hugo rang to sort out an additional practice for the Tuesday,  just three days before the concert. This proved a turning point: it didn't actually sound that bad.

And so the big day arrived: Sound check at 7.00pm; Vinilo Sensation on stage at 10.00; Second band on at 11.00.

The Liverpool Bar itself is a good place for a band to play, and I could happily go back at some future opportunity. The room holds maybe 70 people with space for more on an upstairs balcony. The square shape means that an audience has a good view of the band from anywhere in the room. There are tables to sit, but still plenty of room to get up and dance.

For the bands there are proper stage facilities, including a reasonably secure backstage to change and to leave bags and valuables. The stage area is large enough to accommodate our sizeable band and rises a good metre above the bar room floor, giving the audience a full view of the band. There are moving coloured spotlights and stage smoke. The few photos we have look great. I think the place is designed primarily as a live music venue and becomes a club later in the evening.

The only curious part of the stage is - almost inevitably - the drum 'riser'. Instead on a small elevated platform maybe 20-30 centimetres above the level of the stage and somewhere at the back, the drummer has a separate room 2 metres above the rest of the stage and accessed by a ladder from the backstage area. I became a drummer so I could hide behind the others in the band; up there I felt very exposed.

Everything appeared fairly straightforward … but with concerts, these things never go as planned.

Over in Chile, Argentina were playing Colombia for a place in the semifinals of the prestigious "Copa del Américas". This meant an hour to set up and sound check both bands before a huge white screen was dropped in front of the stage for kick off at 8.00pm. No big deal, except this football match turned into a tense epic dual: full time, extra time, penalty shoot out, penalty sudden death. It had to be one of the longest football games in history and thankfully, Argentina won. By the time it was over and the club doors opened it was almost 11.00pm; we would have to go on pretty much immediately. Then fate played its hand and delivered for us.

Fernando, my friend from the other band and the person who had got us on the bill for this gig, told me that his guitarist had other commitments after midnight and asked if they could go on first. This would mean the other band doing the warm up for us; of course I accepted without a second thought. By the time we hit the stage around 11.30 the place was crowded with people getting happily drunk to celebrate Argentina's victory.

The concert was a runaway success. Despite all my doubts, everyone did their thing and the - possibly quite drunk - audience loved it. We came off stage on a real high and eager to find somewhere else to play as soon as we could. Ticket sales could have better,  but with everyone's foreboding, we only actually sold four tickets … which means at least 3 people in the band invited nobody.

Despite the success, energy and enthusiasm that this concert has given the band, we now have a new problem: Germán,  our guitarist and a very central figure in the band, is leaving to live in the USA in 3 weeks. This is a big loss and he will be hard to replace. This also means the beginning of a search for some new people and the expenditure of time necessary to integrate the new musicians. It could be quite a while before Vinilo Sensation is ready to play again.

Changes

Vinilo Sensation has undergone huge changes since the return from summer recess; not all of them for the better ... perhaps.

Everyone was back and ready to move forward by the end of February. Things had slipped quite a lot and it was going to take a while to get everything tight again. My stated goal was to be ready to play a concert by the end of April. In addition we now have two new members - Hugo and Nacho on sax and trumpet - and these guys need time to fully integrate and learn the set.

Summer had been a bit disappointing in terms of progress. With various band members away, we were incomplete from the end of December to the start of March.  Practice continued, and I had hoped that we would be able to use the time profitably and learn a few new songs; this didn't really happen. We could have played some shows while Julia and Fer were away, but a group decision was taken to put things on hold until the whole band was back together, as a gesture of respect. I thought that this was the correct thing to do, but later I was informed that Jimena was unhappy that we didn't play any summer shows. Why don't people tell me these things?

Due to obvious language problems, it is difficult for me to book shows by myself. Despite my constant encouragement during January and February, nobody lifted a finger - or a telephone - to find a venue to play, and so when March rolled around we had nothing booked for April or May. The earliest we could now find will have to be June and of course everyone is disappointed and frustrated. We were very lucky to get the June date, now I'll probably have to crack the whip a bit to get something sorted out for July. On the positive side, this delay gives us more time to fully integrate the new guys.

The biggest change, though, was the result of a misunderstanding/argument between Julia and I.

It's kind of complicated to explain in full, but some people were having severe financial difficulties.  I negotiated a solution which would shift around the financial contributions - which everyone seemed happy with - and still allow us to move forward with the minimum disruption; particularly with the commitment to the coming concert. Suddenly, Julia came up with an alternative solution which would save everyone money, but severely limit practice possibilities: we could rehearse in her apartment.

Now I don't pretend to be some sort of great visionary, but it seemed very much a road to nowhere option. I - as politely as I could using text messaging in Spanish - rejected the offer. I was later told that my words may have been a bit too direct and caused offence. Anyway, things reached a standoff: everyone had a free choice that Friday to go to Juli and Fer's house or come to the studio. Choices were made and Juli, Fer and Jimena all walked out … and I finished up taking the blame and looking like a monster.

To be honest, Juli and Fer are no great loss; I'd been thinking about some 'downsizing' and Fer would have been my first choice to remove, and that would have inevitably meant his girlfriend, Julia, too. Their musical contributions were limited and Juli had several times shown her problematic attitude.  Losing Jimena, however, was more of a blow. Her musical contribution to the group was large and well developed and she will be difficult to replace (see later).

That little fracas was just over a month ago and I've tried as best I can to put it all behind us and focus on the music.

New musicians with new instruments open up new possibilities and present fresh challenges. So this is with Hugo and Nacho. Without going into specific musical details, they are having a lot of problems understanding what is needed - and what is not needed - and integration is taking a long time. With the concert so close - just 2 more weeks - it's hard to see how they will be suitably ready. On a positive note, we have just been joined by Marisa, who will sing backing vocals to replace Jimena and provide the audience with something nice to look at. I just hope that Ariel can get her ready in time. We are still missing a second melody instrument to complement German - keyboard or guitar - and it's hard to imagine integrating anyone at such short notice. This presents a problem on some songs.

Looking to the future, beyond this month's concert, I see several issues to be dealt with soon.

First, there can be no more immediate concerts - unless this one is an unprecedented success - until arrangements are better organised within the band. That may mean bringing in some new people. This is particularly important as German will be leaving at the end of August and we need to train a replacement - this detail is unknown to the others in the band.

Second, there is a certain amount of frustration and impatience from the older members of the band about the current lack of progress. Considering the recent changes, this is to be expected, but it still means there are various people whose opinions I have to balance and keep happy.

Finally, Hugo has just presented us with an interesting offer: a free and permanent practice space where we can leave our instruments and potentially practice more than once a week and at more convenient and flexible hours. His business/factory building could be made available after hours to use as a rehearsal room. To my mind there are plenty of pluses to this option, but also some big minuses; however, considering the recent problems with Julia, I don't see how I can refuse.
