Concert reports

Play that funky music

Sometimes everything comes together just when you least expect it.

It had been a tense few weeks running up to the latest concert, and I wasn't the only one in the band with doubts about whether the brass section could deliver the goods. I was beginning to despair and had pretty much written off the concert before it even began. The late addition of Marisa on backing vocals had given the band a much needed boost of positive energy, but it seemed too little too late.

As the concert approached I seriously considered dispensing with the services of both Hugo and Nacho, believing that they were actually making a negative contribution to the sound of the band. Two weeks before the gig, Nacho missed a much needed practice session, and the next week - with just seven days to go - Hugo failed to attend what was supposed to be the final rehearsal before the show. I was, with some justification, both furious and desperate.

I decided that the gig should be a 'reward' for their hard work. We could turn down the sound of the brass section on the front of house mix while keeping the stage monitors turned up, that way the audience would never hear Nacho and Hugo and they would never know. And a couple of days after it would be: "Chao chicos".

Tom, Ariel, Germán and I were all sufficiently well rehearsed that we had no worries about our own playing. But the apparently unconcerned attitude of Hugo and Nacho was proving a very unwelcome distraction and taking my attention away from where I wanted it to be: improving my performance skills and developing the presentation of the show. I began to wonder what must be going on in their heads; do they actually care about the band or are they just having a laugh?

Over that weekend, stage fright or something took hold and a somewhat concerned Hugo rang to sort out an additional practice for the Tuesday,  just three days before the concert. This proved a turning point: it didn't actually sound that bad.

And so the big day arrived: Sound check at 7.00pm; Vinilo Sensation on stage at 10.00; Second band on at 11.00.

The Liverpool Bar itself is a good place for a band to play, and I could happily go back at some future opportunity. The room holds maybe 70 people with space for more on an upstairs balcony. The square shape means that an audience has a good view of the band from anywhere in the room. There are tables to sit, but still plenty of room to get up and dance.

For the bands there are proper stage facilities, including a reasonably secure backstage to change and to leave bags and valuables. The stage area is large enough to accommodate our sizeable band and rises a good metre above the bar room floor, giving the audience a full view of the band. There are moving coloured spotlights and stage smoke. The few photos we have look great. I think the place is designed primarily as a live music venue and becomes a club later in the evening.

The only curious part of the stage is - almost inevitably - the drum 'riser'. Instead on a small elevated platform maybe 20-30 centimetres above the level of the stage and somewhere at the back, the drummer has a separate room 2 metres above the rest of the stage and accessed by a ladder from the backstage area. I became a drummer so I could hide behind the others in the band; up there I felt very exposed.

Everything appeared fairly straightforward … but with concerts, these things never go as planned.

Over in Chile, Argentina were playing Colombia for a place in the semifinals of the prestigious "Copa del Américas". This meant an hour to set up and sound check both bands before a huge white screen was dropped in front of the stage for kick off at 8.00pm. No big deal, except this football match turned into a tense epic dual: full time, extra time, penalty shoot out, penalty sudden death. It had to be one of the longest football games in history and thankfully, Argentina won. By the time it was over and the club doors opened it was almost 11.00pm; we would have to go on pretty much immediately. Then fate played its hand and delivered for us.

Fernando, my friend from the other band and the person who had got us on the bill for this gig, told me that his guitarist had other commitments after midnight and asked if they could go on first. This would mean the other band doing the warm up for us; of course I accepted without a second thought. By the time we hit the stage around 11.30 the place was crowded with people getting happily drunk to celebrate Argentina's victory.

The concert was a runaway success. Despite all my doubts, everyone did their thing and the - possibly quite drunk - audience loved it. We came off stage on a real high and eager to find somewhere else to play as soon as we could. Ticket sales could have better,  but with everyone's foreboding, we only actually sold four tickets … which means at least 3 people in the band invited nobody.

Despite the success, energy and enthusiasm that this concert has given the band, we now have a new problem: Germán,  our guitarist and a very central figure in the band, is leaving to live in the USA in 3 weeks. This is a big loss and he will be hard to replace. This also means the beginning of a search for some new people and the expenditure of time necessary to integrate the new musicians. It could be quite a while before Vinilo Sensation is ready to play again.

Two out of three ain't bad

Last Friday - 5 days ago - the band played its final gig of this year. After the heady euphoria and enthusiasm of the previous two concerts, this felt a bit flat. Technically we probably played our best, but some of the adrenaline was missing from what felt like 'just another gig'. I don't think it helped that we were playing El Suburbano - the location of our first concert - again.

The fact that we played this concert at all was simply down to bad planning. After the success of the first gig, back in October, the intention had been to play two more before the end of the year. But as we moved through November nothing else was on the horizon, so we decided to ask the very agreeable owner of El Suburbano (named "Rojo" for his long red hair) if we could have another slot in December. No sooner had we confirmed, than the Obras stadium concert came up. Had I known this would happen, I would never have pushed for this third concert.

The cards were stacked against us from the start. We were to be the final act on a night of Rock music. This scheduled our show for 11.30, but knowing the place, I expected a lot later; we actually hit the stage about 12.30. Earlier acts were a fabulous hard Blues band with a great front man knocking out Rolling Stones tunes and a couple of borderline heavy metal bands. The small audience were mostly friends of the other bands and were never going to be impressed by our gentler Disco/Funk set; although a handful of girls were generous enough to get up and dance. I consoled myself and the rest of the band with the thought that when we finally get the right crowd we will be so well rehearsed that we'll blow them away.

There is a theory - borne out by a lot of anecdotal evidence - to which I subscribe: the 'three concert syndrome'. It goes something like this: Concert number one, all your friends come because they want to see what you can do; Concert number two, they all come back again, because it's polite; Concert number three, the audience consist of wives and girlfriends and a dog; Concert number ... well, there never is another concert and the band disintegrates, or in the case of El Reflejo, implodes. I'm determined not to let this happen, and so I have my 'master plan'.

Ariel

The basic idea is that we are 'entertainers' rather than 'artists'. I figure that if we can get a lot of drunk people on their feet and having a good time, they won't care so much about our skills as musicians; they'll remember a great party and want to come again ... and again ... and again. I believe this is the way we can break out of the three concert syndrome and get to play regularly; maybe once a month. It could also be a way to get occasional paid work for parties and events. The people at Obras de Sanitarias were sufficiently impressed by our performance there that they suggested we might play their Christmas party, but some of the band are away for the holidays and anyway we don't have enough music for a full hour set.

And there lies another problem: quantity of music. This last month or so of concerts has fired up the enthusiasm of everybody, particularly Ariel, who is always rather impatient. Ariel talks of business plans and playing paid events in country clubs; this is all very possible, but we need over an hour of show, and right now we have 12 songs which total 45-50 minutes. The fact that various members of the band are on holiday during the next 2 months or so means that the whole group won't be together again until the end of February, which should give us plenty of time to learn some more songs and build up our 'party set'.

Fever

Our second concert, just a couple of days ago, saw a move into the big league: Stadium venue and live television!

Ok, so the 'stadium' wasn't River Plate (although that was just around the corner), but an indoor basketball arena. The television was live, but mostly focused on the game not us. And as for the 'big league' ... well, I know nothing about basketball, but it was a Wednesday night and there we're plenty of empty seats.

Outside the band, Tom (Tomas) is a web designer and has been working on a project with the management of a sports club, Obras de Sanitarias. Apparently the place is quite important from a sporting perspective. However, when not being used for basketball, the arena doubles as the famous “El Templo del Rock” music venue. A quick look at the website (http://www.obrasclub.com.ar/historia-del-club/) reveals just how prestigious a venue this place has been, with the likes of Charley Garcia, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, The Police and The Sex Pistols all having played there.

Tomas
Tom was in the club office and overheard a conversation about them looking for up-coming bands to play. He immediately put forward Vinilo Sensation as a possibility. Apparently there were a hundred or more bands on the list, but somehow our name found its way to the top.

At this point, I probably should point out that we didn't actually play a "Temple of Rock" concert, as such. We were the warm-up and half-time entertainment for a basketball game - something for the audience see in the arena while the TV viewers are watching adverts. But hey! We played in a stadium, and we did get a few seconds on TV!

From a personal perspective, I didn't have a great day. Earlier in the afternoon I was hit by a vicious dose of the flu. By the time we were sound checking I was sneezing and sniffing and my nose was all red. I felt like shit and was in no condition to play music, but as they say, "the show must go on", and I kept it all together as best I could.

The show itself went really well. The half-time set was a blast with kids dancing in the aisles and 'Rocky' - the club mascot - running about the arena to the music. They even asked us to play another song ... although I think that had less to do with audience enthusiasm and more to do with the running time of advert breaks.

By the final cymbal crash I was practically hallucinating. I really couldn't tell if I was playing in consistent time or not - apparently it was all ok, although I have yet to see the video. I came off stage and ran outside sneezing and sneezing as I went. The following day I spent in bed.

This concert was a big opportunity in many ways. Some TV footage will look great as part of a demo to show to other potential venues. The audience - such as it was - consisted of middle-class sports fans from the suburbs, who are quite possibly members of other clubs and who may need live music for an event. Additionally, the potential importance of the show gave us all a big kick in the backside and we sorted out stuff like flyers, contact email, Facebook and our website:  http://www.vinilosensation.com/

Next concert is in two weeks. We still need to expand to a full one hour set.

Hair of the dog

Vinilo Sensation
"YES! YES! YES!" - (punches sky; high-fives; etc). This first concert was an overwhelming success; now we just need to replicate the performance next time.

The concert was last Friday; almost 10 days ago as I write. Everything just came together at the right moment and everybody was on top form ... and thoroughly pleased with themselves afterwards. There were inevitably some issues about presentation, but no musical problems or disasters. All-in-all, better than I had hoped and by far the most personally satisfying concert I've played in ... decades.

My idea had been to make this a 'practice concert'; only very close friends were invited. This provided an opportunity to get comfortable with the idea of playing live and identify any technical stage problems, without the pressure of playing in front of a large crowd of friends. To that end it worked perfectly. By the end of the show everyone's confidence was on a high and all were asking: "When are we going to do this again?"

We were the first band on a long bill - 3 bands after us. This was useful as the sound check was done for us, and being such a big band, that was probably for the best. Having said that, I'm not sure how good the sound actually was front of house. The recording from the mixing desk which I took away and remixed is probably a lot better than anyone heard on the night. After us came another band with a similar style fronted by Fernando: the keyboard player I had been in a band with back when I first arrived in Argentina. It was good to see him again and to hear how his work is progressing. They were a lot tighter than us, but far less visually entertaining.

Fer
As I have said before, we are more focused on entertainment that art. To this end, presentation is going to be very important. Dressing up seems to work: Fer wore a huge black afro wig and a white vest showing off his muscles and tattoos; Jimena went for a black mini-skirt and busty top which contrasted nicely with her very pale skin and gave the front seats something nice to look at; Ariel had a very subdued retro look with all blue denim; and I wore a white triby and Hawaiian shirt. The others dressed neatly except for German in his rather disappointing red tee-shirt. This generally eclectic look could really work as long as everybody gets with the program next time.

Perhaps the most difficult factor to deal with was the way the audience had been organised. A group of people had come to the bar for a very large birthday party and two long tables had been made up starting right in front of the stage and leading a long way back down the room. At these were sat a collection of nicely dressed middle-aged revelers, far more interested in pizza, beer, cake and conversation than watching the band. Somewhere in the darkness beyond was our real audience, who should have been dancing down by the stage. Right at the front and centre there was a guy with a big grey mustache, slouched right back in his chair with a bored look on his face and giving half-hearted applause between songs. It was off-putting enough for me at the back; must have been awful for Ariel. (Mental note: arrange room layout before next gig.)

On the whole, everything went very well indeed. The owner of El Suburban would like us to come back and Fernando, from the other band, is interested in playing other double bill shows with us.
